Trace Drawings

This series of work developed as a response to
my observations while working on the body
motion drawings.  A recurring question presented
itself during the process that remains grounded
in ideas of accumulation and accretion;
conceptually and physically where does a project
originate.  Two distinct origins became apparent.
Work that is generated from either an internal or
external source.  An internal parameter is limited
to my body coupled with an idea of how to
proceed in order to record a motion of the (my)
body.  An external parameter utilizes a form, a
tangible object external to the body coupled with
an idea of how to proceed in order to record that
form.

The trace drawings distance myself, removing
another level of self-expression, placing more
emphasis on the process and less on the “I” or
self ego.  The form is no longer repeatable purely
by myself and my own hand but can be generated
from objects available to anyone, blurring
delineations that separates the artist from the
viewer.  In addition many of the drawings are
coupled with an audio recording of every session
as to provide a secondary sense element in order
to help situate the viewer in my space and provide
a sense of real time.  In a way I can refer to the
drawings as “analog” works.
